The Evatt Foundation condemns the attack at Bondi beach yesterday. We recognise it as an act of terror and violent extremism directed at the Jewish community peacefully celebrating Hanukkah.

We express our sorrow for the loss of life and the suffering of all those injured and caught up in the violence and its aftermath.

We call out anti-semitism, hatred and violence in all its forms, and for respect for the human rights of all people, no matter their race, religion or political beliefs. In this heartbreaking moment we are reminded of the inherent dignity and shared humanity of every person.

We call for unity in our broader community and for our leaders to champion our common humanity and our rich diversity at this fragile and uncertain time, for it is that which binds us and which gives our society its strength and unique character.

We acknowledge and thank first responders, health care professionals and emergency services personnel and all the brave individuals who stepped forward to help strangers in need. It is their actions that shine a light in this darkness.

The Executive Committee of the Evatt Foundation
