David Primrose

David Primrose is Lecturer in Health Policy and Planning at the Leeder Centre for Health Policy, Economics and Data, and Course Coordinator of the Master of Health Policy and Planning, University of Sydney. His research centres on exploring themes in the political economy of health, including depoliticisation and the post-politics of public health, malnutrition and food systems in contemporary global capitalism, health inequity and inequality, neoliberalism and ideology critique, planetary health, workplace health and safety, far-right and populist politics, critical pedagogy, and critical political economic theories of health. He also co-convenes the Social Policy and the Root Causes of Health Inequality Node in the Sydney Policy Lab.


David is currently working on research projects examining the depoliticisation of hunger and obesity in global food policies, the neoliberal production of Australia’s tobacco tax, and health inequality and poverty in Australian capitalism. He previously co-edited the Routledge Handbook on the Political Economy of Health and Healthcare, the Handbook of Alternative Theories of Political Economy, and the SAGE Handbook of Neoliberalism, and guest-edited special issues of the Journal of Australian Political Economy. He is on the editorial boards of the Journal of Australian Political Economy and Rethinking Marxism, and he joined the Evatt Foundation Executive Committee in 2025.
